WASHINGTON, Jan 29 

 More than 60 people were feared dead after an American Airlines regional passenger jet collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter on Wednesday and crashed into the frigid Potomac River near Reagan Washington National Airport.

"At this point we do not believe there were any survivors," District of Columbia fire chief John Donnelly said at a Thursday press conference.

Donnelly said 28 bodies had been recovered from the river so far, in what was shaping up to be the deadliest U.S. air disaster in more than a decade. "We will work to find all the bodies and reunite them with their loved ones," he said.

American Airlines confirmed 60 passengers and four crew members were aboard the jet. The helicopter, on a training flight, was carrying three soldiers, a U.S. official said.

Passengers on the flight included family and coaches returning from events in Wichita, Kansas, including Russian-born former world champions Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov.

"We have been told that there are no survivors. We mourn with all those who have been impacted," Wichita mayor Lily Wu said at a news conference.

বঙ্গোপসাগরের মধ্যে আট বর্গকিলোমিটার আয়তনের প্রবালসমৃদ্ধ দ্বীপ সেন্ট মার্টিনের দক্ষিণে প্রতিবেশ সংকটাপন্ন আরেকটি বিচ্ছিন্ন দ্বীপ ছেঁড়াদিয়া। এটি বাংলাদেশের সর্বশেষ ভূখণ্ড। এই ভূখণ্ডের মধ্যভাগে মাথা উঁচু করে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল ৬০-৭০ ফুট উঁচু বিশাল একটি কাঠবাদামগাছ। দ্বীপের প্রবীণ ব্যক্তি ও জনপ্রতিনিধিদের ধারণা, গাছটির বয়স ৬০-৭০ বছরের কম নয়। সমুদ্রে চলাচলকারী মাছ ধরার ট্রলার কিংবা টেকনাফ স্থলবন্দরে যাতায়াতকারী পণ্যবাহী জাহাজ গাছটি দেখে দিক নির্ণয় করত। এখন গাছটি নেই। রাতের আঁধারে গাছটি কেটে নিয়ে গেছে কেউ।

সম্প্রতি সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপে গেলে কাঠবাদামগাছটি দেখা যায়নি। দ্বীপের দক্ষিণাংশের দিয়ার মাথা সৈকত থেকে দক্ষিণ দিকে গোলদিয়া দ্বীপ, তারপর কিছুটা দূরে মাঝের দিয়া, তারপর ছেঁড়াদিয়া দ্বীপ। ছেঁড়াদিয়ার পর বাংলাদেশের আর কোনো ভূখণ্ড নেই। তাই এটি ছিল বাংলাদেশ ভূখণ্ডের শেষ বড় গাছ।

চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উদ্ভিদ বিজ্ঞান বিভাগের সাবেক সভাপতি অধ্যাপক এম এ গফুর গবেষণা কাজে বেশ কয়েকবার সেন্ট মার্টিনের ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় গেছেন। এ ব্যাপারে জানতে চাইলে প্রথম আলোকে তিনি বলেন, এ ধরনের গাছ বিচ্ছিন্ন একটি দ্বীপের পরিবেশের ভারসাম্য রক্ষায় খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখে। গাছের শেকড় ও মাটি, মাঝের কাণ্ড ও ঊর্ধ্বাংশে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন পরিবেশে নানা ক্ষুদ্র ও বড় জীব বসবাস করে। তাই দেশের সর্বশেষ ভূখণ্ডের গাছটির পরিবেশগত গুরুত্ব ছিল।

সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপের দক্ষিণে দিয়ারমাথা সৈকতে দাঁড়ালে দুটো দ্বীপ গোলদিয়া ও ছেঁড়াদিয়া দেখা যায়। ডান পাশের ছেঁড়াদিয়া দেশের শেষ ভূখণ্ড। এক সময় এই স্থান থেকে কাঠবাদাম গাছটি দেখা যেত। বর্তমানে সেটি আর নেই।সম্প্রতি তোলা

গত বছরের জানুয়ারিতেও ওই তিনটি বিচ্ছিন্ন দ্বীপে প্রচুর কেয়াগাছ দেখা গেছে। এখন তার কিছুই নেই। সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপের দিয়ার মাথা সৈকতে দাঁড়িয়ে দক্ষিণ দিকে তিনটি বিচ্ছিন্ন দ্বীপের হতশ্রী চেহারা দেখে ক্ষুব্ধ পরিবেশকর্মীরা। কক্সবাজার বন ও পরিবেশ সংরক্ষণ পরিষদ সভাপতি দীপক শর্মা প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, গত বছরও দিয়ার মাথায় দাঁড়িয়ে ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় মাথা উঁচু করে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা ৬০-৭০ বছর বয়সী কাঠবাদামগাছটি দেখা গিয়েছিল। এত বড় ও বয়স্ক বাদামগাছ কক্সবাজারের কোথাও চোখে পড়েনি। গাছটিকে ঘিরে বাদুড় ও পাখির অভয়ারণ্য গড়ে ওঠে। বাদাম খেয়ে বাঁচত প্রাণীকুল। স্থানীয় অনেকে গাছের বাদাম ও বীজ সংগ্রহ করতেন। এ ছাড়া এটি দেশের সর্বশেষ ভূখণ্ডের একমাত্র বড় গাছ হওয়ায় ল্যান্ডমার্ক হিসেবে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল। এমন মহিরুহ কে কেটে নিল, তদন্ত দরকার।

এ প্রসঙ্গে সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপের ইউপি চেয়ারম্যান মুজিবুর রহমান প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, গত বছরের নভেম্বর-ডিসেম্বরের দিকে দ্বীপে বেশ কয়েকটি ঝোড়ো হাওয়া আঘাত হেনেছিল। ধারণা করা হচ্ছে, সে সময় তীব্র বাতাসে বাদামগাছটি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়। তখন স্থানীয় কেউ গাছটি কেটে কিংবা চুরি করে নিয়ে যেতে পারে। এ ব্যাপারে অনুসন্ধান চালিয়েও গাছটির খোঁজ মেলেনি। ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় পর্যটকসহ স্থানীয় লোকজনের যাতায়াত নিষিদ্ধ হলেও অনেকে রাতের বেলায় সেখানে মাছ ধরতে যাচ্ছেন।

২০২৩ সালের জানুয়ারিতে এই প্রতিবেদক ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় গিয়ে কাঠবাদামগাছটি দেখেন। ওই প্রতিবেদকের সঙ্গে ছিলেন কক্সবাজার চেম্বার অব কমার্স অ্যান্ড ইন্ডাস্ট্রিজের সভাপতি আবু মোর্শেদ চৌধুরী ও জেলা প্রশাসনের একজন শীর্ষ কর্মকর্তা। তাঁরা ছেঁড়াদিয়া দ্বীপের প্রবাল শৈবাল, প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদ ও পর্যটকের উপস্থিতি দেখতে গিয়েছিলেন। ওই সময় তাঁরা কাঠবাদামগাছটির কাছে যান। অন্তত ৬০-৭০ ফুট উচ্চতা এবং আড়াই ফুট বেড়ের বিশাল কাঠবাদামগাছটির গোড়ায় তখন কয়েকটি বড় আকারের গর্ত (ছিদ্র) দেখা গিয়েছিল। সেখানে বেশ কিছু বাদুড় বাসা বেঁধেছিল। গাছে ছিল পাখির বাসা। বাদামে ভরপুর গাছটি দেখতে যাওয়া কয়েকজন পর্যটকের দেখাও মিলেছিল তখন।

পুরোনো স্মৃতি রোমন্থন করে আবু মোর্শেদ চৌধুরী প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, প্রতিবেশ সংকটাপন্ন ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় পর্যটকের যাতায়াত আগে থেকেই নিষিদ্ধ ছিল। তারপরও নিষেধাজ্ঞা অমান্য করে শত শত মানুষ ইঞ্জিন নৌকা ও দ্রুতগতির কয়েকটি স্পিডবোট নিয়ে ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় যাতায়াত করেন। এখনো সন্ধ্যায়, রাতে অনেকে ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় যাচ্ছেন অবৈধভাবে।

আবু মোর্শেদ চৌধুরী বলেন, বেশ কয়েক বছর ধরে ছেঁড়াদিয়ার চারদিকে ছড়িয়ে-ছিটিয়ে থাকা পাথরের স্তূপ থেকে প্রবাল এবং বালুচর থেকে শামুক-ঝিনুক সংগ্রহ করতেন কিছু মানুষ। গত বছরের ৫ আগস্টের পর অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন সরকার সেন্ট মার্টিনে পর্যটকের যাতায়াত সীমিত করে। সরকারি সিদ্ধান্ত অনুযায়ী গত ১ ডিসেম্বর থেকে জাহাজে চড়ে দৈনিক দুই হাজার পর্যটক সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপ ভ্রমণের সুযোগ পাচ্ছেন। টেকনাফের বিকল্প হিসেবে কক্সবাজার শহরের নুনিয়াছটা বিআইডব্লিউটিএ-জেটি ঘাট থেকে দৈনিক পাঁচটি জাহাজ সেন্ট মার্টিনে যাতায়াত করছে। ৩১ জানুয়ারি জাহাজ চলাচল বন্ধ হয়ে যাবে। তখন আর কারও সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপ ভ্রমণের সুযোগ থাকবে না। কিন্তু নিষেধাজ্ঞার মধ্যেও ছেঁড়াদিয়ার দুর্লভ কাঠবাদামগাছটি উধাও হওয়ার ঘটনা রহস্যজনক। প্রায় পাঁচ হাজার নারকেলগাছে ভরপুর সেন্ট মার্টিন ছাড়াও টেকনাফ-কক্সবাজারের কোথাও এত বয়স্ক কাঠবাদামগাছ দেখা যায় না।

দ্বীপের মাঝের পাড়ার জেলে মোহাম্মদ রহিম (৬০) বলেন, গত বছরের জুলাই মাসেও তিনি ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় মাছ ধরতে গিয়ে কাঠবাদামগাছটি দেখেছেন। বিচ্ছিন্ন দ্বীপ হলেও মাথা তুলে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা বাদামগাছটি সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপের দক্ষিণপাড়ার সৈকত থেকে খালি চোখে দেখা যেত। বঙ্গোপসাগরের কয়েক কিলোমিটার দূরে মাছ ধরতে যাওয়া ট্রলারের জেলেরা বাদামগাছটি দেখে দ্বীপের অবস্থান শনাক্ত করে সাগরে চলাচল করতেন। এখন গাছটি কোথায় গেল, কে বা কারা কেটে নিল, জানা যাচ্ছে না।

সেন্ট মার্টিনের সাবেক ইউপি চেয়ারম্যান ফিরোজ আহমদ খান বলেন, পাঁচ একর আয়তনবিশিষ্ট ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় ফলদ গাছ বলতে এই কাঠবাদামগাছটি ছিল। গাছটির বয়স ৫০ বছরের বেশি হতে পারে। সাগরের জোয়ারে কোনো দেশ থেকে বাদামের বীজ ভেসে ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় উঠতে পারে। তা থেকে গাছটির সৃষ্টি বলে ধারণা করা হচ্ছে। কারণ, ছেঁড়াদিয়ায় কোনো লোকবসতি নেই। গাছটিও কেউ রোপণ করেননি।

Moments after returning to her home in an affluent neighbourhood in northern Gaza, 44-year-old Sabrine Zanoun said she was overwhelmed with the mix of emotions.

"We are happy to see our family again… [but] it is also so sad it makes you cry - the destroyed houses, the rubble," she told the BBC.

"People would come here just to walk because of the beautiful scenery. Now it's mostly ruins."

Sabrine was one of hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to return to their homes, or the ruins in their place, in northern Gaza on Monday.

The mass return comes a week into a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas aimed at permanently ending a war that began more than 15 months ago.

Like others in Gaza, she had been displaced several times over the course of the war, but most recently in the central city of Deir al-Balah.

She joined a "flood of people" who travelled by foot along the coastal al-Rashid Street - a route that opened to displaced Gazans early on Monday morning.

One security official in Gaza told AFP news agency that more than 200,000 people had crossed to the north of the strip by foot in a two-hour period.

"It was so long and tiring," said 24-year-old Israa Shaheen, shortly after reaching Gaza City.

"Until the middle of the road, people were happy and singing and stuff like that, but then when it was taking a long time people were getting frustrated. Then we reached a sign that said 'Welcome to Gaza' and a lot of Palestinian flags and people began to feel joy again," she said.

Others made the journey by car along a different route.

"There are thousands of people here. They're filling the entire road… we are very happy but I am also feeling sad that I know I will reach Gaza City but my home is no longer there," 42-year-old Wafaa Hassouna said on the phone as she neared the checkpoint.

When people reached their destinations, they spoke of their shock at what remained standing in their communities.

Mohammed Imad Al-Din, a barber who had been waiting at the checkpoint, returned to find his home destroyed, and his salon looted and damaged by a nearby Israeli strike.

Lubna Nassar had been waiting with her two daughters and son to be reunited with her husband. But while he had survived, their home was gone.

"The warmth of reunion was overshadowed by the bitter reality - we no longer have a home so we moved from a tent in the south to a tent in the north," she said.

মোফাট এ নিয়ে ইএসপিএনক্রিকইনফোর সঙ্গে কথা বলেছেন। খেলোয়াড়দের ঠিকমতো পারিশ্রমিক না পাওয়া নিয়ে তাঁর ভাষ্য, ‘বাংলাদেশ প্রিমিয়ার লিগের বকেয়া পারিশ্রমিকের বিষয়টা বারবার শুনতে পাওয়া হতাশার, কয়েক বছর ধরেই এ নিয়ে বিপিএল বারবার দোষী হচ্ছে।’

মোফাট আরও বলেছেন, ‘এই সমস্যাগুলো অগ্রহণযোগ্য, তারা (বিপিএল) উন্নতি করতে পারছে না, আর টুর্নামেন্টের প্রচার-প্রসার ঘটে খেলোয়াড়দের জন্যই। যেকোনো লিগে এটা আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবেই ঠিক করা যে, চুক্তিপত্রে কিছু মৌলিক সুরক্ষা এবং ন্যূনতম মান বজায় রাখার বিষয়ে খেলোয়াড়েরা আত্মবিশ্বাসী থাকবে এবং সেগুলো ভালোভাবে কার্যকরও করা যাবে

The Trump administration launched an immigration enforcement blitz in Chicago on Sunday that includes several federal agencies who have been granted additional authorities to arrest undocumented immigrants in the United States, according to multiple sources.

It’s part of a broader effort to add manpower to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which has limited resources and agents, as the administration tries to ramp up arrests nationwide and amass a larger force to carry out the president’s pledge.

ICE agents are expected to be joined by officials from multiple Department of Justice agencies as they target public safety and national security threats. It’s a multiday operation that will spread across the country.

Late last week, acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman issued a directive giving Justice Department law enforcement officials immigration-enforcement authority. The agencies include the FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

“Mobilizing these law enforcement officials will help fulfill President Trump’s promise to the American people to carry out mass deportations,” Huffman said in a statement announcing his directive.

White House border czar Tom Homan has previously said that if other undocumented immigrants are encountered over the course of their operation, they may also be arrested and detained.

Homan is in Chicago to oversee operations, according to one of the sources. Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove is also in Chicago on Sunday to observe immigration enforcement operations.

বায়ুদূষণের পরিস্থিতি নিয়মিত তুলে ধরে সুইজারল্যান্ডভিত্তিক প্রতিষ্ঠান আইকিউ এয়ার। বাতাসের মান নিয়ে তৈরি করা এই লাইভ বা তাৎক্ষণিক সূচক একটি নির্দিষ্ট শহরের বাতাস কতটা নির্মল বা দূষিত, সে সম্পর্কে মানুষকে তথ্য দেয় ও সতর্ক করে। সেই সতর্কবার্তায় ঢাকাবাসীর উদ্দেশে আইকিউ এয়ারের পরামর্শ, বাইরে বের হলে সুস্বাস্থ্যের জন্য অবশ্যই মাস্ক পরতে হবে। খোলা স্থানে ব্যায়াম করা যাবে না। আরও একটি পরামর্শ, ঘরের জানালা বন্ধ রাখতে হবে।

ঢাকার বায়ুদূষণের প্রধান উপাদান হলো বাতাসে অতিক্ষুদ্র বস্তুকণা বা পিএম ২.৫-এর উপস্থিতি। ঢাকার বাতাসে এর উপস্থিতি বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থার (ডব্লিউএইচও) মানমাত্রার চেয়ে প্রায় ২৮ গুণ বেশি।

In Las Vegas, Trump was expected to discuss a less controversial pledge to end taxation of income from tips and overtime, a proposal he first made in June as he courted service workers in the presidential swing state of Nevada. The tip-heavy hospitality industry comprises more than a fifth of jobs.

"Can you remember that little statement about tips?" Trump said during one of several inauguration day speeches on Monday. "Anybody remember that little statement? I think we won Nevada because of that statement."

Michael McDonald, Nevada Republican Party chairman, said the idea is attractive to people in the state who are facing high prices for essential goods like food and gas.

"He cares about the no tax on tips, no tax on Social Security. That was something that we brought to the community, and everybody loved it because we’re all hurting," McDonald told local television after welcoming Trump on Friday night.

Trump promised to pursue an aggressive agenda of tax cuts if re-elected, which may face some hurdles even in a U.S. Congress controlled by his fellow Republicans.

The proposals Trump made on the campaign trail - from extending his 2017 tax cuts to abolishing tax on tips, overtime and Social Security benefits - could add $7.5 trillion to the nation's debt over the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Trump is pushing a plan to explicitly use revenue from higher tariffs on imported goods to help pay for extending trillions of dollars in tax cuts, an unprecedented shift likely to face opposition from Republican budget hawks concerned about the reliability and durability of tariff revenue.

Days before he returned to office, some of his Republican allies in Congress warned that Trump's aggressive tax-cut agenda could fall victim to signs of worry in the bond market.

At a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill, Republicans in the House of Representatives aired concerns that the estimated $4 trillion cost over the next 10 years of extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts could undermine the U.S. government's ability to service its $36 trillion in debt, which is growing at a pace of $2 trillion a year.

আরও এক বছরের জন্য মেট্রোরেলের টিকিটে ভ্যাট মওকুফ

মেট্রোরেলের টিকিটের ওপর ভ্যাট অব্যাহতি সুবিধা আরও এক বছরের জন্য বাড়িয়েছে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর)। আগামী ৩১ ডিসেম্বর পর্যন্ত এই অব্যাহতি থাকবে। আজ সোমবার এনবিআর এ–সংক্রান্ত আদেশ জারি করেছে।

বর্তমান ভ্যাট আইন অনুযায়ী, যেকোনো শীতাতপ নিয়ন্ত্রিত রেলের টিকিটে ১৫ শতাংশ ভ্যাট আরোপের বিধান আছে। মেট্রোরেল পুরোপুরি শীতাতপ নিয়ন্ত্রিত এবং গণপরিবহন। কিন্তু মেট্রোরেল চালুর পর শুরু থেকেই এর মালিক কোম্পানি ঢাকা মাস ট্রানজিট কোম্পানি লিমিটেডের অনুরোধে এই সেবার ওপর ভ্যাট আরোপ করা হয়নি।

ভ্যাট মওকুফের আদেশে এনবিআর বলেছে, মেট্রোরেল বাংলাদেশের সর্বাধুনিক ও জনপ্রিয় গণপরিবহন। মেট্রোরেল যানজট নিরসনে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখার পাশাপাশি কর্মঘণ্টা সাশ্রয়ে অগ্রণী ভূমিকা পালন করছে। মেট্রোরেলকে অধিক জনপ্রিয় করার লক্ষ্যে এর যাতায়াতকে ব্যয়সাশ্রয়ী করা প্রয়োজন।

এ জন্য ভ্যাট আইনের ১২৬ ধারার উপধারা (৩)–এর আওতায় মেট্রোরেলের টিকিটের ওপর ভ্যাট অব্যাহতির সুবিধা দেওয়া হয়। এই আদেশ তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে কার্যকর করা হলো বলে এনবিআর জানায়।

উত্তরা থেকে আগারগাঁও পর্যন্ত মেট্রোরেল চালু হয়েছিল ২০২২ সালের ডিসেম্বর মাসে। এখন পুরোদমে মতিঝিল পর্যন্ত চলছে মেট্রোরেল, যা ভবিষ্যতে কমলাপুর পর্যন্ত সম্প্রসারিত করা হবে। বর্তমানে প্রতিদিন কমবেশি আড়াই লাখ যাত্রী এই নগর পরিবহন ব্যবহার করেন।

২০২৩ সালের শুরু থেকেই মেট্রোরেলের টিকিটের ওপর ভ্যাট আরোপের উদ্যোগ নেয় এনবিআর। ওই বছরের ২২ জানুয়ারি ঢাকা দক্ষিণ ভ্যাট কমিশনারেটের তৎকালীন কমিশনার শওকত আলী সাদী ভ্যাট আরোপের আহ্বান জানিয়ে ঢাকা মাস ট্রানজিট কোম্পানি লিমিটেডকে (মেট্রোরেল কোম্পানি) চিঠি দেন। পরে মেট্রোরেল কর্তৃপক্ষের সঙ্গে একাধিক বৈঠকও হয়। তবে ভ্যাট আরোপ থেকে এনবিআর শেষ পর্যন্ত পিছিয়ে আসে।

২০২৩ সালের মে মাসে এনবিআর প্রজ্ঞাপন জারি করে জানায় যে ২০২৪ সালের জুন মাস পর্যন্ত মেট্রোরেলের টিকিটের ওপর ভ্যাট মওকুফ থাকবে। পরে এই সুবিধা অব্যাহত রাখা হয়।

ইসরায়েলের কারাগার থেকে মুক্ত ২০০ ফিলিস্তিনি

ইসরায়েল ও হামাসের মধ্যে যুদ্ধবিরতি চুক্তি অনুযায়ী ইসরায়েলি দুই কারাগার থেকে ২০০ ফিলিস্তিনি বন্দী মুক্তি পেয়েছেন। এর আগে চার ইসরায়েলি নারী সেনাকে মুক্তি দেয় হামাস। আজ শনিবার এই ফিলিস্তিনি ও ইসরায়েলিরা মুক্তি পান।

ইসরায়েলের অধিকৃত পশ্চিম তীরের অফার কারাগার ও নেগেভ মরুভূমির কাজিয়ত কারাগার থেকে আজ ২০০ ফিলিস্তিনিকে মুক্তি দেওয়া হয়। মুক্ত হওয়া ফিলিস্তিনিদের মধ্যে বিভিন্ন বয়সী নারী ও পুরুষ রয়েছেন।

কাতার, মিসর ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মধ্যস্থতায় গত রোববার গাজায় যুদ্ধবিরতি কার্যকর হয়। এর মধ্য দিয়ে ১৫ মাসের এ যুদ্ধের আপাতত ইতি ঘটেছে। এরপর আজ দ্বিতীয় দফায় ফিলিস্তিনি ও ইসরায়েলিরা মুক্তি পেলেন। এর আগে প্রথম দফায় হামাস তিন জিম্মিকে ছেড়ে দেয়। এর বদলে ইসরায়েলের কারাগারগুলো থেকে মুক্তি পান ৯০ জন ফিলিস্তিনি বন্দী। যুদ্ধবিরতি চুক্তির আওতায় ধাপে ধাপে হামাস জিম্মিদের ছেড়ে দেবে। পাশাপাশি ফিলিস্তিনি বন্দীদেরও মুক্তি দেবে ইসরায়েল।

ফিলিস্তিনের স্বাধীনতাকামী সংগঠন হামাস ২০২৩ সালের ৭ অক্টোবর ইসরায়েলি ভূখণ্ডে হামলা চালায় । ওই হামলায় প্রায় ১ হাজার ২০০ জন নিহত হন। জিম্মি করে গাজায় নেওয়া হয় ২৫১ জনকে। ওই দিনই গাজা উপত্যকায় নৃশংস হামলা শুরু করে ইসরায়েলি বাহিনী। এক বছরের বেশি সময় ধরে চলা যুদ্ধে গাজায় ৪৭ হাজার ২০০ জনের বেশি ফিলিস্তিনি নিহত হয়েছেন। তাঁদের বেশির ভাগই বেসামরিক মানুষ।

Trump Fires 17 Government Inspectors General

President Donald Trump's administration has fired 17 independent inspectors general (independent observers) from key US government agencies. They were fired on Friday, Reuters reported, citing a report in the Washington Post.

The report, citing anonymous sources, said inspectors general from the departments of Defense, State, Transportation, Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development, Interior and Energy, among others, have been fired.

The firings are believed to have violated federal law, which requires the US Congress to be notified 30 days in advance of the dismissal of inspectors general.

The White House was asked for a response to the Washington Post report. It did not immediately respond.

The inspector general is an independent position in the US government. Inspectors general audit, investigate and investigate allegations of waste, fraud and harassment. They can be fired by the president or the head of the relevant agency, whoever nominated or appointed them.

Most of the fired officials were hired during President Trump's first term. The officials were notified of the firings in an email from the White House personnel director. The email said the firings would be effective immediately.

অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারের উপদেষ্টা মাহফুজ আলম বলেছেন, যারা বাংলাদেশপন্থী, তাদের মধ্যে নির্বাচন হবে। বাংলাদেশ বিরোধী, আওয়ামী লীগ ফ্যাসিবাদীদের কোনোভাবেই নির্বাচনে অংশগ্রহণ করতে দেওয়া হবে না। আজ শনিবার চাঁদপুরের হাজীগঞ্জ বাজারে ছাত্র-জনতার সঙ্গে শুভেচ্ছা বিনিময়কালে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন।

মাহফুজ আলম বলেন, বিএনপি, ‎জামায়াত নির্বিশেষে যত রাজনৈতিক দল, ছাত্র‎সংগঠন আছে, শ্রমিক, নারী, আলেম-ওলামা আছেন—সবাই যাঁরা বাংলাদেশপন্থী ‎সবাই বাংলাদেশে থাকবেন এবং নিয়ে সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচনপ্রক্রিয়ার মধ্য দিয়ে ‎তাঁরা পজিটিভ একটি কম্পিটিশনের ভেতর দিয়ে বাংলাদেশে শাসন প্রতিষ্ঠা করবেন। বাংলাদেশের ‎জনগণকে নিয়ে বৈষম্যহীন ইনসাফমূলক একটি ‎শাসনব্যবস্থা ‎কায়েম করবেন।

সরকারের অগ্রাধিকারের বিষয়গুলো কী সেসব বিষয় বক্তব্যে উল্লেখ করে মাহফুজ আলম বলেন, ‘আমাদের সরকারের অগ্রাধিকার রয়েছে খুনিদের বিচার করা, গুম-খুন, ধর্ষণের বিচার করা, সংস্কার করা এবং অবশ্যই বাংলাদেশপন্থী সব রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর অংশগ্রহণে একটি সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচন বাংলাদেশকে উপহার দেওয়া, যেটি গত ১৬ বছরে সম্ভব হয়নি।’

মেট্রোরেল চলাচলে বিঘ্ন

ঢাকায় মেট্রোরেল চলাচল আজ শনিবার বেলা দেড়টার দিকে বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। তবে এক ঘণ্টার মধ্যে মতিঝিল থেকে পল্লবী স্টেশন পর্যন্ত মেট্রোরেল চলাচল শুরু হয়।

স্টেশনে থাকা কয়েকজন যাত্রী বলেন, ট্রেনে ওঠার সময় পল্লবী পর্যন্ত যাবে বলে ঘোষণা দেওয়া হয়েছে। এরপর আর ট্রেন চলেনি।

এদিকে মেট্রোরেল সেবা বিঘ্নিত হওয়ায় স্টেশনগুলোয় যাত্রীদের ভিড় দেখা গেছে। ট্রেনের অপেক্ষায় রয়েছেন যাত্রীরা।

ঢাকা ম্যাস ট্রানজিট কোম্পানি লিমিটেডের উপ প্রকল্প পরিচালক মো. আহসানউল্লাহ শরিফী আজ প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, পরিচালক (অপারেশন এন্ড মেইন্টেন্যান্স) জানিয়েছেন যে, পল্লবী থেকে মতিঝিল লাইনে ট্রেন চলাচল স্বাভাবিক আছে। যান্ত্রিক সমস্যার কারণে কিছু বিঘ্ন হয়েছিল। উত্তরা উত্তর স্টেশনে কিছু সমস্যা আছে।
